Gorka Marquez has confirmed he is leaving Strictly Come Dancing after a decade on the series, in a move that adds to a growing shake-up behind the scenes.
The 35-year-old said the decision was his own, announcing he is ready to “hang up” his dance shoes after 10 years on the BBC hit.
‘Time to say goodbye’
Marquez shared the news in a statement, reflecting on what the show has meant to him both professionally and personally.
“Being part of the show has been so much more than just a professional opportunity,” he said, adding that it helped him build a career, form close friendships and start a family.
He added that he would now “take a step back” from the spotlight while continuing to support the show from afar.
Marquez joined Strictly in 2016 and became a fan favourite, reaching the final three times with celebrity partners including Alexandra Burke, Maisie Smith and Helen Skelton.
His exit comes during a wider overhaul of the show’s professional lineup, with several other dancers also departing.
What’s next for Gorka?
Despite leaving Strictly, Marquez is not stepping away from television.
He will continue as a judge on Spain’s Bailando con las Estrellas, and hinted he could one day return to the BBC show in a different role.
Personal life shaped by the show
Marquez also found love on the series, meeting Gemma Atkinson during the 2017 season. The couple now have two children together.
Atkinson reacted to the news with a supportive message, writing: “Exciting times ahead.”
The BBC paid tribute to Marquez, calling him a “hugely popular” member of the Strictly family and praising his contribution over the years.
