Iran has reportedly put forward a fresh proposal to the United States aimed at easing tensions in the region by reopening the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, while pushing sensitive nuclear negotiations to a later stage, Axios reported on Monday.
According to officials familiar with the development, the proposal focuses on achieving an immediate de-escalation by ending the ongoing conflict and lifting restrictions affecting oil shipments through the strait. The idea is to separate urgent economic and security concerns from the more complex and politically sensitive nuclear issue, where divisions remain within Iran’s leadership over how much concession should be offered.
The Strait of Hormuz holds particular importance for countries like Pakistan, as a significant portion of global oil supply passes through this route. Any disruption directly impacts international oil prices, which in turn affects Pakistan’s already strained import bill and inflation outlook.
However, the proposal presents a challenge for the United States. Lifting the blockade and easing pressure on Iran could weaken Washington’s leverage in future negotiations, especially regarding Tehran’s uranium enrichment programme, one of the core concerns for the US.
The situation remains fluid, with US President Donald Trump expected to consult his national security team on the next steps. He has indicated a preference for maintaining economic pressure on Iran, particularly through restrictions on its oil exports, in hopes of forcing concessions.
Diplomatic efforts over the weekend, including engagements involving Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and regional stakeholders, failed to produce a breakthrough. Talks in Islamabad did not move forward as expected, while parallel discussions continued in Oman, highlighting the ongoing complexity of the negotiations.
Sources suggest that Iran has communicated its proposal through regional mediators, including Pakistan, signalling a willingness to prioritise immediate economic relief and conflict resolution before entering detailed nuclear talks. The US has acknowledged receiving the proposal, though its response remains unclear.
