Houthis threaten Bab el-Mandeb Strait closure as Iran-US tensions rise again

US-Iran war

Yemen’s Houthi group has warned it may close the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world’s most critical shipping routes, raising fresh concerns over global oil flows and maritime trade. The group said the move could be considered if the United States continues what it describes as obstruction of peace efforts, adding that if the strait is shut, “no force will be able to reopen it.”

The Bab el-Mandeb Strait connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and is vital for global energy shipments. Experts warn that any disruption could have major consequences for international trade and oil supply chains.

Earlier, Iranian Parliament Speaker Baqir Qalibaf said there has been some progress in negotiations with the United States, but “a long way still remains.” He criticized reported US plans for restrictions, calling them “foolish and ignorant,” and questioned limits on maritime passage.

Qalibaf also issued a warning, saying US minesweepers should not advance even slightly, adding that any forward movement would be met with fire. He further claimed Iranian forces had previously targeted enemy drones and an American F-35 fighter jet during conflict, saying the message to adversaries had already been made clear.
