IMF set to approve $1.2bln for Pakistan tomorrow

ISLAMABAD: The IMF Executive Board is set to meet on Monday, with Pakistan expecting approval of around $1.2 billion.

The meeting will review Pakistan’s staff-level agreement. $1b is expected under the ongoing EFF loan program, along with $20 million from the climate-focused RSF fund.

Pakistan’s current 37-month loan program began in September 2024. The first $1 billion EFF installment was released then, the second in May 2025. The upcoming release will include the third EFF installment and the first RSF installment for climate projects.

Last month, Finance Minister Mohammad Aurangzeb said Pakistan would act on every issue pointed out in the latest IMF report, signalling the government’s intent to push governance and anti-corruption reforms as it seeks IMF board approval for fresh funding.

“These are points the IMF has marked for action. The plan is to fix them, and that’s what will happen,” Aurangzeb said, adding he expected progress to shape the way forward when the IMF board meets in December. He also expressed optimism about the ongoing programme, saying a deal was expected to reach approval soon.
