Islamabad’s district administration has ordered markets and shopping malls across the capital to close by 8pm under new energy conservation measures, according to an official notification issued on Sunday.
The notification, issued by the office of the District Magistrate Islamabad, introduces revised business operating hours that will remain in force until further orders.
Under the new regulations, hospitals, pharmacies, laboratories and medical stores have been exempted from the restrictions and may continue operating as usual. Petrol pumps and CNG stations will also remain open under their normal schedules.
The notification further states that milk and dairy shops will not be subject to the new closing times. Sports facilities, including gyms and padel courts, have also been exempted from the restrictions. Likewise, IT companies and call centres will be allowed to continue their operations without any changes to their working hours.
Restaurants, food outlets and traditional tandoors will be required to close by 10pm. The same closing time will apply to grocery stores, vegetable and fruit shops, and bakeries.
Authorities clarified that takeaway and home delivery services will not face any restrictions and may continue operating beyond the prescribed closing hours.
The notification also directs wedding halls, marquees and venues hosting private events to shut down by 10pm. Officials said the revised business timings are part of broader energy-saving measures aimed at reducing electricity consumption in the federal capital. The order will remain effective until further instructions are issued by the district administration.
