Karachi braces for hottest day as heat index may hit 50°C

KARACHI: Pakistan’s financial hub of Karachi is likely to experience its hottest day of the season on Saturday, with the “feels-like” temperature expected to reach as high as 50 degrees Celsius, weather experts said.

Meteorologists warned that intense heat combined with high humidity and low wind speeds could significantly raise the heat index, making conditions particularly oppressive across the city.

On Friday, the heatwave had already peaked, with the perceived temperature climbing to around 49°C. Conditions remained uncomfortable overnight as the lack of wind led to persistent humidity.

Experts said the actual temperature on Saturday could rise to 39°C, while suburban areas may see the mercury touch 40°C. However, due to elevated humidity levels and weak sea breeze activity, the perceived temperature during the afternoon hours is expected to range between 49°C and 50°C.

A slight improvement in weather conditions is anticipated by evening as sea breezes are expected to resume. However, authorities warned that humidity may return later in the night if wind speeds drop again.

The extreme heat and humidity are likely to disrupt daily life, raising concerns for residents across the city.

Authorities and health experts have advised people to take precautionary measures, including staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and taking special care of children and the elderly to prevent heat-related illnesses.
