Kathryn Hahn is stepping into one of Disney’s most iconic villain roles.
The actress has been cast as Mother Gothel in the studio’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Tangled, with Disney confirming the news in a social media announcement that quickly drew attention from fans.
The reveal came through a short Instagram video shared by Walt Disney Studios in collaboration with Hahn. In the clip, the actress appears wearing a black T-shirt printed with the name Mother Gothel while joking about her “outfit of the day”.
“Hey, OOTD – just found out what that stands for,” Hahn says in the video. “So here’s my outfit of the day: simple jeans, glasses, T-shirt… easy. You know, just another day.”
The post was captioned “OOTD, Mother Gothel”, while Hahn also updated her Instagram bio to read “mother knows best”, referencing the villain’s well-known song from the original animated film.
The casting adds another high-profile role to Hahn’s growing list of standout performances. The actress has recently gained renewed popularity following her appearances in Marvel projects including WandaVision and the series Agatha All Along.
Disney’s live-action Tangled will star Teagan Croft as Rapunzel, while Milo Manheim, known for Disney Channel’s Zombies films, will portray Flynn Rider.
The film will be directed by Michael Gracey, best known for The Greatest Showman. The screenplay is written by Do Revenge filmmaker Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, with Cruella producer Kristin Burr attached to produce.
Released in 2010, the animated Tangled was directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard and became a major success for Disney, earning more than $592 million worldwide at the box office.
The film’s song ‘I See the Light’ went on to win a Grammy Award and was nominated for best original song at the Academy Awards.
Disney has increasingly turned its animated classics into live-action remakes in recent years, and the studio is hoping Tangled will follow the success of previous adaptations as it brings Rapunzel’s story back to the big screen.
