PESHAWAR: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Tuesday handed over assets worth more than Rs6 billion to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government after recovering them from suspects in connection with the Kohistan corruption case.

NAB Chairman Lt-Gen (retd) Nazir Ahmed formally transferred the assets to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah at a ceremony in Peshawar.

According to the NAB, the assets handed over in the first phase of recoveries include cash, gold, properties and luxury vehicles recovered during what it described as a comprehensive investigation into the case.

Nazir Ahmed said that the alleged fraud involved the embezzlement of more than Rs37 billion in public funds.

He said that investigators conducted forensic examinations of more than 1,500 bank accounts to trace the flow of funds and uncover what he described as a complex corruption scheme.

The NAB chairman said that efforts to recover additional assets linked to the case were continuing.

The Kohistan corruption case is one of the largest financial irregularity investigations undertaken in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in recent years and relates to alleged misappropriation of government funds through a network of bank accounts and beneficiaries.
