WEB DESK: Kuwait International Airport’s Terminal 1 suffered extensive damage after an overnight barrage of missiles and drones attributed to Iran struck the facility, prompting the suspension of all commercial flights.

Kuwaiti authorities reported injuries among airport staff and personnel, though the full extent of casualties remains unclear, according to Reuters.

The strike comes amid heightened regional tensions following recent exchanges between Iran, the United States, and Israel.

Extensive structural damage reported

The General Directorate of Civil Aviation confirmed that the T1 passenger building was directly targeted, resulting in severe destruction to parts of the infrastructure.

Thick smoke was reported rising from the site, with emergency services responding swiftly to contain fires and secure the area.

Flights have been suspended indefinitely, with incoming aircraft diverted to alternative regional airports. Officials urged travellers to check with airlines for updates as operations remain disrupted.

Regional escalation raises concerns

The attack on Kuwaiti soil marks a significant escalation in the broader conflict, with Iran reportedly retaliating against perceived support for US and Israeli actions. Kuwait has condemned the strike as a violation of its sovereignty.

No immediate claim of responsibility was issued by Iranian officials, though multiple regional sources attributed the assault to Tehran’s ongoing campaign against Gulf states hosting foreign military assets.

Kuwaiti air defences intercepted several projectiles, but debris and direct hits caused substantial harm to civilian aviation facilities.
