ISLAMABAD: Social media users in Pakistan are inquiring as to whether May 1st, which falls on a Tuesday, will be declared a public holiday in honour of Labor Day.

In honour of Labor Day, the federal government has yet to issue a formal proclamation designating May 1, Wednesday as a public holiday in Pakistan. It is noteworthy, therefore, that May 1 was in fact included as a public holiday in a December 2023 Cabinet Secretariat statement outlining all gazetted holidays for the year 2024.

However, the government will make a formal announcement about this. All Pakistani schools, colleges, and universities, including those in the cities of Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi, Peshawar, and Quetta, will be closed on Wednesday, May 1, in observance of a public holiday.

In addition, if the public holiday is announced, private and public offices will also remain closed on May 1. State Bank of Pakitan is also expected to announce a bank holiday on Labour Day.

Every year on May 1, people celebrate International Labor Day in observance of laborers’ and workers’ accomplishments and to raise awareness of their rights. Often referred to as “May Day,” it originated in the eight-hour day movement of the American labor union movement in the 19th century.
