Lahore faces power shortfall amid supply gap and outage claims

Pakistan power outages worsen as hydropower generation falls

Electricity demand in the Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lahore Electric Supply Company) region currently stands at around 2,350 megawatts, according to official figures shared by the utility.

Officials said the region is receiving approximately 2,250 megawatts from the national grid, resulting in a shortfall of nearly 100 megawatts. The gap between demand and supply continues to place pressure on the distribution system, particularly during peak hours.

Despite the shortfall, LESCO has claimed that unannounced power outages in the city have largely been eliminated. The utility maintains that its management has improved load distribution and reduced unscheduled load shedding across the region.

However, ground reports from residents in several parts of Lahore suggest that electricity disruptions are still being experienced. Citizens in multiple neighbourhoods report power cuts lasting between two and three hours at a time.

Areas including Awan Town, Ichhra, Iqbal Town, and Gulshan-e-Ravi have been affected by intermittent outages, according to local accounts. Similar disruptions have also been reported in Harbanspura, Mughalpura, and Dharampura, where residents say electricity supply remains inconsistent throughout the day.

Consumers in affected areas have expressed concern over the continued outages, stating that the disruptions are impacting daily routines, businesses, and household activities, particularly during hot weather conditions when electricity demand remains high.

Energy officials have not issued a detailed explanation regarding the continued localized outages despite the claimed reduction in unannounced load shedding. It remains unclear whether the shortfall is being managed through scheduled outages or targeted distribution adjustments in specific feeders.

The situation highlights ongoing challenges in balancing electricity demand and supply in Lahore, even as authorities continue to emphasise improvements in system efficiency and grid management.

Residents have urged authorities to provide a more consistent power supply and improve transparency regarding load shedding schedules to avoid uncertainty and inconvenience.
