Lavish tax-free retirement plan awaits President Alvi despite sour mood

ISLAMABAD: President Arif Alvi, who for years operated from the peripheries of the political limelight, has come to the forefront just as he approaches retirement.
The president’s role can vary greatly based on individual dynamics, but the perks and privileges that accompany the office after retirement remain consistently generous, in stark contrast to the challenges faced by the populace grappling with inflation.
Amidst President Alvi’s recent expressions of dissatisfaction via a tweet on two legislative documents, a comprehensive retirement package has been waiting for him, promising a host of benefits.
These include a lifetime residence funded by the state, a tax-free monthly allocation of 2,000 units of electricity, and a provision of 100 cubic meters of complimentary gas per month.
Furthermore, the president and his immediate family are to receive comprehensive medical coverage both within Pakistan and abroad.
The president, after retirement, will also have unrestricted access to state guest houses located across Pakistan and that too free of charge.
Financially, the president will get a package that includes a monthly car allowance of Rs66,000, along with complete exemption from income tax for the remainder of his life.
Additionally, the president will enjoy a pension equivalent to 12% of his monthly salary of Rs1,229,190.
Lastly, President Alvi and his immediate family will be granted a diplomatic passport for life. Despite President Alvi’s current demeanor portrayed through his tweets, his post-presidential days are set to be markedly different from the life of a lay, thanks to this generous retirement plan.
The president, after retirement, will be entitled to services of one private secretary in BPS-17 or 18, one security guard, one driver and one cook for life from the date on which right to receive pension under President’s Pension Act, 1974.
Presidents are provided with a free official residence for life. In case an official residence is not available or occupied, they are eligible for a rent allowance at the rate of Rs50,000 per month, which will be maintained at government expenses.

Moreover, the Presidential Pension Act also outlines the pension provisions, where former Presidents receive fifty per centum of the pension as is payable at the time, and are further eligible for a free official residence or a rent allowance of twenty-five thousand rupees per month, to be maintained at government expenses.
This retirement benefits package, as enshrined in the Presidential Pension Act, seeks to ensure a secure and dignified post-presidential life.
