MUMBAI: Fans of the cult classic 3 Idiots have reason to celebrate, as fresh reports suggest director Rajkumar Hirani has finally locked the script for the long-awaited sequel, 15 years after the original film made cinematic history.

According to a Pinkvilla report, Hirani and his team have been quietly shaping the follow-up for months, and the script is now said to be complete. Excitement is reportedly running high among everyone involved, with the makers confident that the sequel will rekindle the humour, heart and message that turned 3 Idiots into a blockbuster phenomenon.

The 2009 hit centered on the adventures of three engineering students brought to life by Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi, alongside Kareena Kapoor Khan in a memorable key role. If all goes as planned, the entire principal cast is set to reunite, marking the first on-screen pairing of Aamir and Kareena since the original film.

Industry insiders say the story will pick up more than a decade after the characters parted ways, exploring how their lives have evolved while preserving the warmth and wit audiences loved. “The narrative takes their journey forward with fresh challenges and new emotional layers,” a source revealed.

Production is expected to begin next year, though an official statement from the makers is still awaited.

Hirani, who had been developing a Dadasaheb Phalke biopic, has reportedly paused that project to focus fully on 3 Idiots 2. The film will once again see Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Aamir Khan joining Hirani as producers.

Released in 2009, 3 Idiots became a cultural milestone, sparking nationwide debates on academic pressure and redefining mainstream Hindi cinema. With the iconic cast returning and the script now locked in, the sequel is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases of the coming years.
