Mexico steps in after US denies Iran team stay ahead of FIFA tournament
Mexico has indicated it is willing to accommodate Iran’s national football team after US authorities reportedly refused to allow the squad to stay in the country during an upcoming international tournament, the Mexican president said.
According to the Mexican president, following the US refusal, FIFA reached out to Mexico to explore alternative arrangements for the Iranian team’s accommodation. He said there were no obstacles on Mexico’s side to hosting the team, signalling readiness to support the tournament’s logistical requirements.
The development comes amid ongoing uncertainty over Iran’s participation arrangements in the United States, where part of the competition is scheduled to be held.
Separately, Reuters reported that Iran is expected to play its three group-stage matches in Los Angeles and Seattle, two major host cities in the United States. Despite the logistical challenges, the team is still set to participate in the tournament.
Iran will begin its campaign on June 16, when it faces New Zealand in its opening group match.
While no official statement has detailed the reasons behind the US decision, the situation has prompted FIFA to step in and coordinate with alternative host nations to ensure the team’s participation is not disrupted.
The arrangement highlights growing behind-the-scenes coordination between FIFA, host nations, and participating countries as organisers work to manage political and logistical sensitivities ahead of the global sporting event.
Officials have not yet confirmed whether Iran’s accommodation will be fully shifted to Mexico or if the plan involves a hybrid arrangement across multiple host countries.
The tournament schedule remains unchanged for now, with Iran still expected to compete in all assigned group fixtures as planning discussions continue between stakeholders.
