Mike Tyson expected in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Former heavyweight world champion Mike Tyson is expected to visit Pakistan to witness the WBA bantamweight gold world title bout between Mohammad Waseem and Thailand’s Jakrawut Majungoen in Lahore on November 29.

Sources told Nukta that efforts are under way to bring Tyson to Pakistan for what is being described as a historic sporting event.

Waseem, who recently claimed the WBA title in Quetta by defeating Venezuela’s Ernesto Ireneo in the ninth round, will defend his crown in Lahore.

“Yes, Tyson is a legendary name and if sponsorships are secured, he will be here with us on fight night,” a source told Nukta.

Tyson, widely regarded as one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time, simultaneously held the WBA, WBC and IBF titles during his career. Sources said that other high-profile boxing figures, including former world champion Roy Jones Jr, are also expected to attend.

Jones, who retired two years ago, is a four-division world champion with titles in the middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight categories. He also won a silver medal for the United States at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, finishing his professional career with 76 fights, 66 wins and 10 losses.

Much-anticipated fight

The Waseem–Majungoen clash is expected to be a thrilling contest. Majungoen, 30, has fought 59 professional bouts, securing 29 knockouts with seven losses.

Waseem, a three-time WBC flyweight silver champion and former WBC No. 1 contender, holds a record of 16 fights with 14 wins — 10 by knockout — and two defeats, both in world title bouts.

The Quetta-born boxer is scheduled to depart for Liverpool on September 30 to begin preparations for what he has described as the most crucial fight of his career. Sources said he has maintained good physical condition in Pakistan and kept his fight weight under control.

Speaking to Nukta about his training camp, Waseem said: “Liverpool will be my main base and I will be there next week to begin intensive preparations under my coach Danny Vaughn.”

“I have kept up my training here at home though I did not push too hard. My weight is well under control,” he said, adding that within 10 days of arriving in Liverpool, he expects to reach peak form.

“I have plenty of experience training in Liverpool. The weather suits my regimen and I have access to a well-equipped gym,” he noted.

Waseem outlined his training schedule, saying his morning session usually runs from 10 am to 1 pm, followed by rest and prayers before resuming training from 5 pm to 7 pm.

The boxer also plans a two-week training stint in Dallas, United States, focused on sparring.

“I am aiming to get high-quality sparring in Dallas, especially with partners in my weight class. It will help me improve my speed and adaptability,” he said.

“It would be ideal to train with sparring partners from Mexican, Dominican and American boxing schools to diversify my preparation,” he added.
