Mohsin Naqvi arrives in Tehran for talks on bilateral ties, regional developments

TEHRAN: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi arrived in Tehran on Monday for talks with senior Iranian officials, with Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni receiving him at the airport.

Naqvi’s visit will focus on bilateral relations and cooperation between Pakistan and Iran, according to Iranian news agency Mehr.

Iranian media reported that discussions would also cover the implementation of agreements signed between the two countries earlier.

Iranian news agency Tasnim, meanwhile, reported that the visit was not linked to the exchange of messages between Iran and the United States.

“It said Naqvi was neither carrying a message to Iran nor expected to relay an Iranian message to Washington, with his talks instead focused on bilateral relations and cooperation,” Tasnim said.

However, Pakistani government sources cited by Anadolu said Naqvi would discuss the evolving regional situation and bilateral relations with the Iranian leadership.

The sources said the talks would also cover attacks by Yemen’s Houthi group on Saudi Arabia’s oil and economic infrastructure and efforts to revive stalled US-Iran peace talks.

The visit comes as Pakistan continues diplomatic efforts aimed at supporting dialogue and regional de-escalation amid the wider conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

Pakistan has previously played a mediation role in contacts between Iran and the United States.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir have also been involved in diplomatic efforts to promote a negotiated settlement.

The visit also follows Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni’s official visit to Pakistan in July, when he met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other senior officials.

Pakistan said at the time that it would continue to play the role of an “honest and sincere mediator and facilitator” in efforts to promote regional peace and stability.

Naqvi’s latest trip is his sixth visit to Tehran since the US war on Iran in February.
