The movie will delve into the backstory of Simba’s father, providing insights into the fan-favourite character’s youth before he became a father.

Mufasa: The Lion King is directed by Barry Jenkins and produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Pastel Productions. The film reunites its stellar voice cast, including Donald Glover, Billy Eichner, Beyoncé and Seth Rogen. Joining them are new additions to the cast, featuring A-list talent such as Kelvin Harrison Jr., Mads Mikkelsen, and even Beyoncé’s daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, making her debut.

Development on the movie commenced four years ago, with the voice cast confirmed the following year in August.

The trailer already has fans in a tizzy, evoking tears of nostalgia while also presenting fresh and more evocative scenery of the African savanna.

The modernised live-adaptation approach used for the 2019 movie was also employed for the prequel. Similar to most contemporary Disney remakes, computer-generated imagery (CGI) was utilised extensively in the production process.

Some older fans of the original have expressed discomfort and even annoyance at the use of CGI for the beloved 1994 classic. They view the recent trend of remakes of beloved classics as nothing more than a cash-grab and “nostalgia-bait”.

Nostalgia-bait can be understood as content deliberately designed to evoke feelings of nostalgia in its audience, often by recreating past content already released or existing previously. The tactic has seen a rise in Hollywood ever since Tim Burton’s live remake of “Alice in Wonderland” in 2010 earned over a billion dollars at the global box office.

Nostalgia-bait can manifest in various forms of media, including TV shows, video games, and even card games. However, criticism tends to be particularly directed towards movies from major studios like Disney. The most significant criticism leveled at these remakes revolves around the perceived lack of originality, minimal deviation in plot from the classic versions, and the perception of being soulless cash-grabs targeted at the aging millennial market.

Many critics also argue that these remakes exploit the memories and emotional attachments people have with certain intellectual properties (IPs).

Despite the recent wave of criticism, many fans of the original 1994 The Lion King are ecstatic to see their childhood memories brought to life with improved graphics on the silver screen once more. Some even argue that it will introduce the modern classic story to a whole new generation.
