Naegleria virus claims another life in Karachi

KARACHI: A 38-year-old man from Gulshan-e-Maymar in Karachi died from the Naegleria virus on Wednesday night, according to a spokesperson for the Sindh Health Department.

The spokesperson said that the man had been suffering from fever, headache, and vomiting since November 7. He stayed home and took medication until November 8.

The spokesperson said that the patient was brought to the emergency room of a private hospital on November 9 after his condition worsened.

The man was diagnosed with the Naegleria virus and died shortly after admission to the hospital.

Symptoms of Naegleria virus

The first symptoms of Naegleria virus usually start about five days after infection, but they can start within 1 to 12 days. Symptoms may include headache, fever, nausea, or vomiting. Later symptoms can include a stiff neck, confusion, lack of attention to people and surroundings, seizures, hallucinations, and coma.
