KARACHI: A six-year-old boy was allegedly abducted, sexually assaulted and murdered in Karachi’s Lea Market area, prompting police to arrest the prime suspect and launch an investigation.

According to South DIG Asad Raza, the arrested suspect is the victim’s neighbour. He said the suspect was taken into custody following preliminary investigations, and the case is being pursued on the basis of what police described as ‘strong evidence’.

Police officials said the investigation is ongoing and vowed to ensure that the suspect is brought to justice in accordance with the law.

The incident drew an immediate response from Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, who sought a detailed report from the IG Police. He directed authorities to ensure that the suspect receives the strictest punishment under the law and stressed that no leniency should be shown to anyone involved in the child’s alleged sexual assault and murder.

The chief minister also ordered that the investigation be conducted transparently, impartially and strictly on merit, while ensuring the victim’s family receives all necessary legal assistance and justice. Describing the incident as “deeply tragic and inhumane”, he said crimes against children are unacceptable and pose a grave threat to society.

Separately, Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar also took notice of the incident and sought an immediate, detailed report from the South DIG. He directed officials to submit a comprehensive update on the suspect’s arrest and the progress of the investigation.

Lanjar instructed the relevant authorities to conduct an impartial and transparent investigation into all aspects of the case and complete the charge sheet on the basis of strong evidence to ensure the suspect is awarded the maximum punishment under the law. He said delivering justice to the bereaved family remained the government’s top priority.

The home minister also directed authorities to strengthen security and child protection measures across the city and instructed the SSP City to regularly update the Home Department on the investigation’s progress.
