KARACHI: Two bizarre incidents in Karachi and Lahore on Tuesday have highlighted the extent of societal decline, reinforcing the notion that people can go to any lengths for financial gain.
In the first case, Karachi police arrested a man for extorting his own uncle with the help of four accomplices.
According to police, on January 25, 2025, a resident of Shah Waliullah Nagar, Qiyamuddin, received a chit demanding extortion.
When he ignored it, he received a phone call on February 21, where the suspects claimed they had fired shots outside his house five days ago.

The caller demanded Rs0.4 million, threatening to kill his son if the payment was not made.
Police used technical tracking to arrest the suspects, identified as Ahmed Raza, Javed, Shahroz, and Irfan.
Suspect Javed was found in possession of the weapon and motorcycle used in the firing incident.
The mastermind, Ahmed Raza, was the victim’s own nephew, who planned the extortion with his friends.
The mobile number used for threats was registered under his name, while the phone belonged to Shahryar.
The suspects have been handed over to the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) for further interrogation.
The other incident is about a man in Lahore, who faked his own kidnapping to extort Rs20 million from his father.
According to DIG Operations Faisal Kamran, a citizen named Abdul Rehman reported his son missing, prompting the formation of a special police team for his recovery.
During the investigation, police discovered that the alleged victim himself had orchestrated the abduction with a friend.
They had demanded Rs20 million from his family.
Using modern technology, police tracked and arrested the “kidnapped” son and his accomplice within 12 hours.
Both suspects have been handed over to investigation police for further action.
