Nigel Bates is heading for an emotional goodbye in EastEnders, as his long-running dementia storyline reaches its final chapter in scenes set to deeply move viewers.
Actor Paul Bradley, who has played Nigel on and off for more than 30 years, has opened up about the ending, calling it both heartbreaking and unexpectedly “beautiful”.
A farewell that will hit hard
Without revealing major spoilers, Bradley said Nigel’s final moments bring closure to key relationships while offering a sense of hope.
The storyline has followed Nigel’s gradual decline with dementia, often described as a “long goodbye”, showing the emotional toll on both the character and those around him.
The storyline has resonated strongly with viewers, many of whom see reflections of their own experiences in Nigel’s journey.
The show worked closely with Dementia UK to ensure the portrayal was accurate, while Bradley also carried out personal research to better understand the condition.
A return that changed everything
Nigel Bates first appeared in EastEnders in 1992 and quickly became a fan favourite. Bradley said returning to the role meant portraying a very different version of the character due to the impact of dementia.
He also reunited with co-stars including Steve McFadden, whose character Phil Mitchell played a central role in Nigel’s final storyline.
Bradley described the experience as one of the most meaningful of his career, highlighting the care and emotional depth behind the storyline.
As Nigel’s story comes to an end, viewers can expect a powerful farewell that reflects both the heartbreak and humanity of living with dementia.
