WEB DESK: Linda Noskova captured her maiden Grand Slam title after overcoming fellow Czech Karolina Muchova 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 in a dramatic Wimbledon women’s singles final on Saturday, recovering from a nervy second set in which she failed to convert five championship points.
The 21-year-old appeared to be cruising towards victory after dominating the opening set in just 32 minutes and building a 5-2 lead in the second set of the first all-Czech women’s singles final at Wimbledon in the professional era.
However, Muchova mounted a remarkable comeback, saving five match points and winning five consecutive games to snatch the second set 7-5, forcing the contest into a deciding set and shifting the momentum on Centre Court.
Noskova responded impressively after the setback, regaining her composure to race into a 5-2 lead in the decider. Although Muchova delayed the inevitable by holding serve, Noskova kept her nerve when serving for the championship a second time.
The ninth seed earned two more championship points before sealing the victory with an unreturnable serve, collapsing to the grass in celebration after securing the biggest title of her career.
Muchova, 29, fought back bravely after appearing out of contention, but her late resurgence was not enough to deny Noskova a breakthrough triumph. Noskova became the third Czech woman in the past four years to win the Wimbledon singles title, following Marketa Vondrousova in 2023 and Barbora Krejcikova in 2024.
