ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Army has destroyed several posts and military positions of the Afghan Taliban in areas adjoining South Waziristan and Parachinar in retaliation for cross-border firing in the Angoor Adda sector, state-run Radio Pakistan reported on Friday, citing security sources.

The sources said Pakistani forces used heavy weapons to target the positions, forcing Afghan Taliban personnel to abandon their posts and flee.

Several personnel of the Afghan Taliban regime were also reportedly killed during the operation, they added, without giving details of the number of casualties or the extent of the damage.

The latest report follows an exchange of fire on October 27, when a mortar shell struck a house in the Angoor Adda area of Lower South Waziristan, killing one local resident and injuring five members of the same family, according to Pakistani officials. Several shops in the area were also damaged.

Security sources said Afghan forces had opened fire from positions inside Afghanistan, targeting Pakistani border posts and residential areas with sniper rifles and small and heavy weapons.

Pakistani forces responded by engaging multiple Afghan Taliban border posts, mortar positions and defensive bunkers with small arms and artillery, the sources said. They added that the retaliatory action forced Afghan personnel to leave several positions.

Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting subsequently said the military had inflicted heavy casualties and material losses on the Afghan side, including the destruction of seven posts. The ministry rejected Kabul’s account of the incident as false.

Afghanistan’s defence ministry, however, claimed Pakistani forces had carried out four drone attacks targeting the Angoor Adda bazaar and the district commissioner’s office in Paktika province.

Earlier, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi had condemned the firing from across the border, saying Pakistan would not tolerate attacks on its people or violations of its sovereignty.

The latest incident comes amid strained relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan over cross-border militancy and repeated clashes along their shared frontier.

Islamabad has repeatedly urged Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities to take verifiable action against militant groups, particularly the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which Pakistan accuses of using Afghan territory to plan and launch attacks. Kabul denies allowing its territory to be used for attacks against other countries and has described militancy in Pakistan as an internal matter.

Security sources said Pakistan’s forces remained committed to defending the country and protecting its people, adding that there would be no compromise on national security.
