Pakistan drops four places in Global Peace Index

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has slipped four places in the latest Global Peace Index (GPI) 2025, now ranking 144th out of 163 countries, placing it among the bottom 20 ‘most peaceful nations’ in the world.

The annual report, published by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), assesses countries based on various indicators, including levels of violence, political instability, internal and external conflicts, and societal safety and security.

Within South Asia, Singapore retained its position as the most peaceful country in Asia, ranking 6th globally. Other regional rankings include:

  • Bangladesh at 123rd
  • India at 115th
  • Sri Lanka at 97th
  • China at 98th
  • Saudi Arabia at 90th
  • United Arab Emirates at 52nd
  • United States at 128th

Pakistan’s continued struggles with political unrest, regional instability, and security-related challenges have contributed to its drop in the peace rankings.

GLOBAL LEADERS AND LAGGARDS

At the top of the index, Iceland is atop the list as the most peaceful nation, followed by other European countries. This year’s top 10 includes:

On the other end of the spectrum, Russia ranks last at 163, along with:

  • Ukraine at 162nd
  • Sudan at 161st
  • Republic of Congo at 160th
  • Yemen at 159th
  • Afghanistan at 158th
  • Israel at 155th

The Global Peace Index (GPI) is widely regarded as a leading measure of peace and conflict across the world. A lower ranking reflects higher levels of conflict, insecurity, or instability within a country. Pakistan’s position near the bottom of the list highlights the urgent need for policy reforms, conflict resolution, and long-term investments in internal security and social stability.
