Chinese FM, COAS reaffirm strategic partnership, regional peace goals

RAWALPINDI: Chinese Foreign Minister (FM) Wang Yi met Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir in Islamabad, the ISPR said on Friday.

The meeting focused on regional security, counter-terrorism, and issues of mutual interest. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the all-weather strategic partnership and improving coordination at regional and global forums, according to the ISPR statement.

Wang Yi reiterated China’s firm support for Pakistan’s sovereignty and development, while the COAS thanked Beijing for its consistent backing. The talks ended with a shared pledge to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.

The Chinese foreign minister, who is visiting Pakistan, also met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Prime Minister’s House. The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and senior cabinet members.

Later, Wang Yi called on President Asif Ali Zardari at the Presidency. FM Dar, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, and federal ministers were also present.

During his visit, Wang praised Pakistan’s counter-terrorism efforts, saying Islamabad was “effectively ensuring the safety of Chinese personnel and institutions” in the country.

Prime Minister Shehbaz is scheduled to visit Beijing at the end of the month to attend the SCO summit from August 31 to September 1.

He is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines.
