Pakistan Idol’s Ibrar Shahid quits, citing ‘unfair, toxic environment’

Pakistan Idol’s Ibrar Shahid

WEB DESK: Pakistan Idol contestant M. Ibrar Shahid has claimed he voluntarily quit the reality show, alleging an unhealthy environment that, he says, undermined artists’ dignity and creativity. In a detailed Facebook statement, Shahid, who made it to the Top 16, said his decision to walk away was driven by “self-respect” and a refusal to stay silent.

Shahid wrote on his Facebook that while the competition was meant to be about “music, dreams, and passion,” he instead encountered what he described as an unfair and emotionally damaging atmosphere. He claimed that contestants’ individuality was restricted, questions were discouraged, and artists’ voices were “controlled.”

The singer said he reached a breaking point on December 9 during a shoot, after months of staying silent in hopes that “hard work would win.” Instead, he said he chose to leave “with dignity.”

According to Shahid, after notifying the team, he received messages warning of disqualification and alleged threats of action if he spoke publicly about his grievances. He said he chose to speak out because “silence protects the system, not the artist.”

Urging young musicians to stand up against mistreatment, Shahid said leaving the show was “not my failure, it is my freedom.” He called on the public to support “real talent” and help end what he described as lobbying, manipulation and hypocrisy within the industry.

Many under the post reminded Shahid that if the system was toxic, he would not have reached Top 16 while others felt that his experience should not be invalidated.

Pakistan Idol has not yet issued a response to his claims.
