Pakistan Navy launches Operation Muhafiz-ul-Bahr to secure maritime trade, energy lifelines

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Navy on Monday launched Operation Muhafiz-ul-Bahr to protect national shipping and energy supply routes amid rising regional maritime security concerns, the military’s media wing said.

In a statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the naval operation was launched in response to an “evolving regional maritime security environment” and potential disruptions to critical sea lanes — vital corridors through which almost 90 per cent of Pakistan’s trade is conducted.

The initiative aims to safeguard Sea Lines of Communication (SLOCs) and ensure the uninterrupted flow of national energy supplies and commercial goods, the ISPR said, as tensions linked to the conflict in the Middle East continue to raise concerns over maritime security.

Under the operation, Pakistan Navy warships are conducting escort missions for merchant vessels, working in close coordination with the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation to monitor and secure the movement of commercial shipping through potentially vulnerable waters.

Naval authorities said the operation already has two merchant ships under escort, one of which was expected to arrive at Karachi later on Monday. They added that naval units remain fully prepared to respond to any emerging maritime threats.

The Pakistan Navy said the new operation reflects its commitment to protecting national maritime interests and maintaining regional stability, amid an uncertain security environment at key global shipping routes.
