Iran has said that the signing of the Islamabad memorandum will not take place on Sunday, while suggesting that the agreement between Iran and the U.S. could still be concluded in the coming days, according to remarks reported by state media.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Saturday that there was no confirmation of a signing ceremony on Sunday, clarifying that the timeline remained uncertain. He added that while the possibility of signing the memorandum in the near future could not be ruled out, any firm date would depend on developments from the other side of the negotiations.

Baghaei noted that caution was necessary in commenting on the schedule, citing ongoing hesitation and lack of final agreement on timing between the parties involved.

The remarks come amid continued diplomatic discussions surrounding the proposed Islamabad memorandum, which officials say remains under negotiation despite expectations of an imminent signing earlier in the week.

Earlier today Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had said that Pakistan is closer to a peace deal than at any point in the negotiations, expressing confidence that finalisation could come within the next 24 hours.

He said electronic signing of the agreement is expected immediately after finalisation, followed by technical-level talks scheduled for next week.

PM Sharif thanked the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran for their continued role in facilitating the negotiations, along with regional partners. He said Pakistan appreciates the support extended by its “brothers in the region” throughout the process. Sharif expressed optimism that the prospective agreement would lay the foundation for lasting peace in the region.

This development marks a significant step forward in diplomatic efforts aimed at stabilising regional relations and strengthening cooperation between the involved parties. Further details are expected after the signing process is completed the government confirmed in its official statement today. Talks are expected to continue at technical level next week.
