Pakistan seeking potential follow-up loan programme: IMF chief

WASHINGTON: Pakistan is currently in talks with the International Monetary Fund regarding a potential successor program to its nine-month, $3 billion stand-by arrangement. IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva mentioned on Thursday that there are significant matters that need addressing in these discussions.

Georgieva, speaking at an event hosted by the Atlantic Council think tank, noted that Pakistan had made significant strides in fulfilling its obligations under the current IMF program. She highlighted that the country’s economy was showing signs of improvement, particularly in the accumulation of reserves.

“There is a commitment to continue on this path, and the country is turning to the fund for potentially having a follow-up program,” said Georgieva.

She continued by adding, “There are very important issues to be solved in Pakistan: the tax base, how the richer part of society contributes to the economy, the way public spending is being directed and of course, creating … a more transparent environment.”
