Pakistan urges US, Iran to extend ceasefire and pursue dialogue

ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar urged the United States and Iran to consider extending a ceasefire and give diplomacy a chance, during a meeting with a senior US diplomat, Pakistan’s foreign ministry said on Monday.

Dar, who also serves as deputy prime minister, made the remarks in talks with US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker in Islamabad, according to a statement from the Foreign Office Pakistan.

He reiterated Pakistan’s position that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable means to address challenges and achieve lasting regional peace and stability, the statement said.

Dar also stressed the need for continued engagement between Washington and Tehran and called on both sides to extend the ceasefire to allow space for negotiations.

Baker conveyed U.S. appreciation for Pakistan’s “constructive and positive role” in promoting regional peace and facilitating dialogue, the ministry added.

The meeting comes amid heightened tensions and ongoing diplomatic efforts to stabilise the situation between the United States and Iran.
