WEB DESK: World leaders and international organisations have warmly welcomed the landmark peace agreement between the United States and Iran, which provides for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and a framework for further negotiations on outstanding issues.
The development, announced on Monday, has been hailed as a significant step towards de-escalation and regional stability following prolonged tensions that have affected global energy security and economic conditions.
Australian leaders highlight economic and diplomatic gains
In a joint statement, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong expressed strong support for the agreement, noting Australia’s consistent calls for restraint and dialogue, including in Lebanon.
They emphasised that restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz would help ease pressure on energy prices and benefit economies worldwide. The Australian leaders also commended the mediation efforts of Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and other countries.
UN chief and regional powers praise breakthrough
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres congratulated the US and Iran on the deal, describing it as “a critical step towards the peaceful settlement of the conflict.” He extended appreciation to Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and other regional players for their constructive role in the negotiations.
Qatar reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to peace and dialogue as the most effective means of resolving differences.
While Türkiye’s leadership thanked Pakistan for its exceptional mediation efforts and expressed hope that the agreement would lead to broader stability in the Middle East. Turkish officials also urged all parties to avoid provocative actions until the deal is formally signed.
The positive global response underscores a collective desire for sustained diplomacy and restraint to consolidate the gains achieved through this agreement.
