MANILA: At least three people were killed and five others injured on Monday morning in a rare school shooting incident in the central Philippines, local police said.

According to Reuters, the incident occurred at approximately 9:00am inside the San Jose National High School, located in the San Jose district of Tacloban City in Leyte province.

Authorities confirmed that the victims were immediately transported to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment and appropriate medical intervention.

Suspects Apprehended

Following the attack, law enforcement agencies moved swiftly to secure the area and track down the perpetrators. Government broadcaster PTV reported that two suspects both believed to be students have been taken into custody. One of the individuals was apprehended directly at the scene of the crime.

Presidential spokeswoman Claire Castro confirmed the developments during a press briefing, stating that the Philippine National Police had acted quickly to apprehend the suspects.

While the Tacloban City Police Office confirmed that an active investigation is underway, investigators have yet to establish a motive behind the deadly assault.

Prevalence of Gun Violence

While mass shootings inside educational institutions remain an extreme rarity in the Philippines, targeted gun violence is a frequent fixture of provincial politics and local rivalries. The country has strict regulations regarding legal firearm ownership, though security experts point out that a vast and highly accessible black market for illicit weapons persists.

The incident marks the most high-profile educational shooting since 2022, when three people including a former city mayor were gunned down just moments before a graduation ceremony at the prestigious Ateneo de Manila University in the capital city.

That attack was later determined by law enforcement to have been a targeted assassination driven by personal grievances.
