Plastic pollution and climate crisis — can Pakistan turn the tide?

ISLAMABAD: Climate change has become one of the biggest challenges of our times and Pakistan is among the top countries hard-hit by its effects.

Due to global warming, Pakistan is facing frequent extreme heat waves, floods induced by melting glaciers, unpredictable rains and droughts. These grave issues are not only taking a toll on the economy but also on human life.  

Over the years, Pakistan has taken numerous measures to mitigate the impact of climate change, including banning single-use plastics.

The ban was imposed on single-use plastics for the first time in Islamabad in 2019, but it could not be fully implemented.

Recently, the Ministry of Climate Change has issued strict instructions that all federal ministries and institutions should strictly implement the ban, aiming to not only reduce environmental pollution but also help reduce the negative effects of climate change.

Plastic pollution and its effects 

Pakistan generates millions of tons of plastic waste every year, but most of it is never recycled. This waste pollutes land, water and marine life. Microplastics, which enter the body through human food and water, are posing a serious risk to health. These particles amass in the body system and cause various diseases. 

Government actions 

The ban on the reuse of plastics has been imposed under the Plastics Regulations of 2003. The government claims that the ban will not only reduce environmental pollution but also have positive effects on public health. 

Agriculture and climate change 

Climate change has also had devastating effects on Pakistan’s agriculture.

Water shortage, infrequent weather conditions, and waning agricultural production are putting huge pressure on the rural economy.

The rapid melting of glaciers is not only exacerbating flood risks but also damaging the water bodies.

 Importance of public awareness 

Raising public awareness is crucial for the success of government initiatives. Awareness should be raised among people that the use of eco-friendly products, instead of plastic bags, is not only better for our health but also for the protection of the environment. 

Challenges faced 

A developing country like Pakistan is facing many challenges to cope with climate change issues. Lack of resources, weak enforcement of laws, and lack of public awareness further compound the issue. Global cooperation, access to advanced technology, and public awareness are indispensable to know the importance of the issue.

 Need for collective efforts 

The government and the people have to work together to mitigate the impact of climate change and pollution. Banning the use of plastic is a positive step, but its true outcome would only be realized if the public take an active part in it. The activity will not only help reduce the current pollution but also provide a clean and healthy environment for future generations.

 Additional measures 

The government must focus on other environmentally-friendly initiatives such as plantation drives, renewable energy projects and proficient water management. Through these measures, the risks of climate change could be mitigated, laying the foundation for a sustainable future. 

Such collective exercise would not only ensure the protection of the environment but also help Pakistan steer towards a steady and safe environment.
