PM, Home Minister must resign for destroying youth’s future: Rahul Gandhi

WEB DESK: Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has demanded the immediate resignations of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing the government of refusing accountability and suppressing youth voices following police action against protesting students. Delhi Police detained Rahul Gandhi along with his sister and Congress lawmaker Priyanka Gandhi, as well as Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, after the protest was stopped near the prime minister’s residence.

Taking to X, Gandhi asserted that the administration had destroyed the future of the country’s youth. He urged citizens to stand in solidarity with students demonstrating against examination irregularities and paper leaks.

Sit-in near PM’s residence and Parliamentary standoff

The social media appeal coincided with high political tension in the Indian capital. Gandhi, alongside Congress leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, staged a sit-in outside 7 Lok Kalyan Marg after security forces halted their progress.

Gandhi stated that opposition lawmakers were forced to take to the streets after their attempts to debate the student crackdown were silenced inside Parliament, alleging that microphonic access was cut off during legislative proceedings.

Minister of State in the PMO Jitendra Singh met Gandhi at the protest site to offer a debate in Parliament. However, opposition leaders rejected the overture after the government declined to confirm the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Following a brief standoff during which Gandhi sustained minor injuries, Delhi Police forcibly detained the leaders.

Student movement intensifies pressure on Centre

The political escalation follows violent clashes in central New Delhi a day earlier, when police used tear gas and batons to disperse thousands of demonstrators participating in the “Chalo Sansad” march. Dozens of civilians and officers were injured during the action.

The street rallies are driven by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), an online student campaign formed in May that has rapidly expanded into a major civil movement.

CJP leadership affirmed that despite the detention of political figures, peaceful sit-ins would continue at Jantar Mantar until their demands regarding examination system reforms and ministerial resignations are satisfied.
