PM launches laptop loan scheme 2025; announces 100,000 free laptops for students

ISLAMABAD: The Government of Pakistan has introduced the Prime Minister Laptop Loan Scheme 2025, aimed at providing laptops to young citizens through interest-free installment plans. Moreover, PM Shehbaz Sharif has also announced 100,000 free laptops for students across Pakistan, on merit basis.

Making the announcement at the International Youth Day celebrations, the premier said the free laptop initiative will be applicable on all four provinces, the federal capital, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. He clarified that this distribution is separate from the interest-based loan scheme for laptops.

The government is carrying out multiple programs to promote and support the country’s youth including Pakistan Education Endowment Scheme, the Pakistan Daanish Authority, and the ongoing Prime Minister’s Laptop Scheme.

Prime Minister’s Youth Programme Chairman Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan noted that over 600,000 laptops have been distributed nationwide under the scheme so far, with 334,556 awarded to male students and 265,444 to female students.

LAPTOP DISTRIBUTION STATISTICS

In 2024, 100,000 laptops were distributed – 58,000 to female students and 42,000 to male students. Provincial breakdown reveals the program’s wide reach:

• Punjab: 247,389 students
• Sindh: 107,034
• Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: 76,094
• Balochistan: 30,513
• Islamabad: 112,270
• Former FATA region: 9,290
• Azad Jammu and Kashmir: 14,312

LAPTOP LOAN SCHEME

Now there is also a loan option available for youth across Pakistan. Under the scheme, eligible applicants can apply for loans ranging from Rs 150,000 to Rs 450,000, depending on the category of the laptop. Repayment plans are structured over several years to allow for smaller monthly payments.

The scheme is open to all Pakistani citizens between the ages of 18 and 35. Eligible applicants include university students, freelancers, and young professionals. Preference will be given to applicants from low-income households. Government employees are not eligible to apply.

To apply, individuals must submit their applications online through the Prime Minister’s Youth Program portal. Required documents include a scanned copy of the applicant’s National Identity Card, a recent photograph, proof of income or guardian’s income, and evidence of current education status such as certificates or university enrollment details. Freelancers can provide links to profiles on platforms such as Upwork or Fiverr.

Officials say the program is intended to improve access to technology and support the development of skills related to digital work. The scheme is part of broader efforts to enhance digital literacy and promote economic participation through freelancing, online education, and e-commerce.

All application procedures have been made digital to ensure accessibility across the country.
