ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday said Islam is a religion of peace, as he underscored Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts in easing tensions between the United States and Iran while calling for unity across the Muslim world.

Addressing a conference organised by the Pakistan Ulema Council, the premier congratulated the organisers and said the gathering reflected a strong sense of unity within the Muslim Ummah. He added that such forums demonstrate collective resolve, focus and commitment to addressing contemporary challenges facing the Muslim world. Highlighting recent global developments, the prime minister noted that the United States and Iran had engaged in direct talks for the first time since 1979. He said that through effective diplomacy, both sides agreed to a temporary ceasefire, which was later extended.

He thanked the parties for accepting Pakistan’s invitation to hold talks in Islamabad, adding that Pakistan played an important role in bringing them to the negotiating table and facilitating the ceasefire. “Pakistan has fulfilled a modest yet significant responsibility for the Muslim world,” he said, expressing optimism that the dialogue would soon translate into lasting peace.

The premier also acknowledged the contributions of Mohammed bin Salman, as well as China, Turkey and other nations, in advancing peace efforts. He praised Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar for his tireless diplomatic engagement and commended Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir for his role in securing the ceasefire and facilitating negotiations.

PM Sharif said the teachings and life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) serve as a guiding light for humanity, urging people to adopt values of compassion, dialogue and exemplary conduct to overcome present-day issues. He also said Pakistan had maintained a balanced and principled stance throughout the recent crisis and would continue to work for peace in the region. He stressed that sustainable peace would not only strengthen regional harmony but also contribute to economic stability and job creation.

Calling on citizens to promote peace through kindness and ethical conduct, the prime minister reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to the defence of the Two Holy Mosques, describing it as a matter of utmost importance. He added that the country’s defence agreement with Saudi Arabia reflects this commitment.

Concluding his remarks, PM Sharif said the entire nation from Peshawar to Karachi, stands united, reaffirming Pakistan’s resolve to play a constructive role in fostering lasting peace and stability in the region.
