Pakistan, Bahrain eye $1bn bilateral trade in three years

WEB DESK: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to embark on a pivotal three-day official visit to China from 23 to 25 May, aiming to bolster the “all-weather” strategic partnership between the two nations.

During the visit, the Prime Minister will hold high-level deliberations with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang to discuss bilateral cooperation, regional security, and the next phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), according to The Nation.

Strengthening economic and strategic bonds

The visit is seen as a cornerstone of Pakistan’s current foreign policy, focusing heavily on “CPEC 2.0.” Discussions are expected to centre on transitioning the multi-billion-dollar project toward a more sustainable, B2B-focused model involving agriculture, information technology, and the establishment of Special Economic Zones (SEZs).

Official sources suggest that several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) will be signed, aimed at attracting Chinese investment into Pakistan’s industrial sector to help stabilise the domestic economy.

Commemorating 75 years of diplomatic relations

A significant aspect of the trip includes participation in events marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Islamabad and Beijing.

Beyond economic matters, the leaders are expected to exchange views on the evolving geopolitical landscape, including the situation in the Middle East and regional connectivity.

The visit underscores the “iron brotherhood” shared by the two countries, with both sides keen to align their strategic interests amidst shifting global dynamics.
