PMD issues heatwave alert for Karachi, most parts of Sindh

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan’s Meteorological Department (PMD) on Wednesday issued a heatwave alert for Karachi and most districts of Sindh, warning of a sharp rise in temperatures across the province from Wednesday through May 11.

The Met Office said that hot to very hot and dry weather is expected to prevail in most parts of Sindh, with heatwave conditions likely in central and upper districts during the period.

It warned that daytime temperatures could rise to 47–49 degrees Celsius in several districts, including Dadu, Shaheed Benazirabad, Ghotki, Khairpur, Nosheroferoz, Jacobabad, Larkana and Sukkur.

The PMD said that Karachi, along with Hyderabad, Naushahro Feroze, Jacobabad, Larkana and Sukkur, is also expected to experience intense heat conditions, the department said.

The Met Office advised the public to avoid unnecessary exposure to sunlight, remain hydrated, and take precautionary measures, particularly for children, women and the elderly.

It also urged farmers to take care during crop harvesting and livestock management in view of the extreme weather conditions.

Heatwave conditions are a regular feature in Sindh during late spring and early summer, often intensifying in interior districts where temperatures frequently cross 45 degrees Celsius.
