PMD issues heatwave alert for parts of Sindh, Karachi to stay hot

ISLAMABAD/KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave alert for parts of Sindh, warning of unusually high temperatures in several districts, while forecasting hot and dry weather for Karachi in the coming days.

The PMD said that most areas of Sindh are likely to experience hot to very hot and dry conditions, with central and upper districts expected to remain under the influence of a heatwave until May 3.

It said that districts including Jamshoro, Dadu, Shaheed Benazirabad, Kashmore, Ghotki, Sanghar, Khairpur, Naushahro Feroze, Jacobabad, Larkana and Sukkur are expected to be particularly affected.

The Met Office said that daytime temperatures in these areas could remain 4 to 6 degrees Celsius above normal.

It has advised residents, particularly children, women and the elderly, to take precautionary measures and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during peak daytime hours.

The advisory also urged increased water intake during the heatwave, while farmers were advised to manage wheat harvesting according to weather conditions and take steps to protect livestock from extreme heat.

In Karachi, according to the PMD, temperatures are expected to exceed 38 degrees Celsius on Friday and Saturday, with hot and dry conditions likely to persist along with relatively strong winds.

Temperatures could rise further to around 39 degrees Celsius on Sunday, the department said.

Despite the rising temperatures, sea breezes are expected to remain active in the coastal city, although occasional westerly winds may also occur.

The PMD said that heatwave conditions are not expected in Karachi during the current spell.
