PML-N agrees on Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rahman’s name for Punjab Assembly speaker

LAHORE: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has agreed on Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rahman’s name for the speaker Punjab Assembly.

It was decided in a meeting that took place at Jati Umra Raiwind on Wednesday which was presided over by PML-N’s nominee for Punjab chief minister, Maryam Nawaz.

All newly elected members of the Punjab Assembly from the Pakistan Muslim League (N) attended the meeting, during which strategies for the upcoming Punjab Assembly session were devised.

Who is Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rahman?

Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rahman, born in Lahore in September 1967, holds an MPA degree from the University of the Punjab, Lahore, which he obtained in 1993. He has a rich and varied professional background:

He began his political career as a Councillor in the Municipal Corporation Lahore (MCL) during 1998-99 and later chaired the Taxation Committee in MCL during 1999. From 2001 to 2002, he served as the Town Naib Nazim in Ravi Town City District Government, Lahore.

Shuja-ur-Rahman’s involvement in the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab spans several terms. He served as a Member from 2002 to 2007 and was re-elected unopposed in 2008. During his tenure from 2008 to 2013, he held ministerial positions, overseeing various departments including Excise & Taxation, Higher Education, School Education, Finance, Literacy & Non-Formal Basic Education, and Transport.

Continuing his political journey, he secured his third consecutive term as a Member of the Punjab Assembly in the 2013 general elections. Presently, he serves as the Minister for Excise and Taxation. Additionally, he has held significant portfolios such as Finance (from 11-06-2013 to 29-05-2015) and Law & Parliamentary Affairs (from 13-10-2014 to 29-05-2015).

His father, a prominent figure in Lahore’s political landscape, served as the Lord Mayor of Lahore from 1979 to 1987 and had a distinguished tenure as a Councillor in MCL for over 26 years.
