WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has strongly criticised past American foreign policy toward Iran, claiming that Tehran has taken advantage of years of diplomatic decisions made by Washington.
Taking to his social media account on Truth Social, he argued that Iran repeatedly delayed meaningful agreements with the United States and other global partners while benefiting from shifting US policies over nearly five decades.
He specifically targeted the Obama administration, saying its approach to Iran included major financial arrangements and a highly flexible diplomatic stance.
According to him, large financial transfers and settlements were made, including a controversial $1.7 billion payment, which he described as poorly handled and damaging to US interests.
The president claimed that these decisions weakened America’s negotiating position while strengthening Iran’s influence in the region.

He further suggested that Iran capitalised on divisions and inconsistencies in US leadership over the years.
Concluding his remarks, he said past administrations had mishandled relations with Iran and warned that the consequences of those choices are still being felt in current geopolitical tensions.
