President Alvi seeks salary increase despite economic challenges

Arif Alvi

ISLAMABAD: President Arif Alvi has requested two salary increases, despite the economic challenges faced by the nation.

Official documents reveal that President Arif Alvi has formally requested for the first salary increment to take effect from July 1, 2021, and the second increment from July 1, 2023.

Currently earning a monthly salary of Rs 846,550, the President’s compensation will rise to approximately Rs 1.24 million starting July 2021, and it will exceed Rs 1.29 million from July 2023.

In a recent communication addressed to the Cabinet Secretary through the Military Secretary, the Presidential Secretariat conveyed its intent to modify the Fourth Schedule of the President’s Salary, Allowances and Perks Amendment Act, 2018.

Caretaker setup will not violate IMF program: minister

This amendment aims to increase the President’s salary to Rs 1,024,325 from July 1, 2021, and further to Rs 1,229,190 from July 1, 2023.

Contrary to this, the Chief Justice of Pakistan’s salary has been revised upwards twice within a span of two years. The Chief Justice’s compensation was set at Rs 1,024,324 from July 1, 2021, and will be adjusted to Rs 1,229,189 from July 1, 2023. This discrepancy indicates that the President’s salary adjustments do not conform to the established standards.

According to the Ministry of Law, amending the Fourth Schedule to revise the President’s salary does not necessitate the introduction of a new amendment act. The Finance Division endorsed the proposed increments on August 22, further supporting this view.

The Ministry of Law anticipates that the proposal will now be presented to the Cabinet for approval. If greenlit, the President will not only receive the requested salary adjustments, but also retroactive payments for the two-tiered increment.
