President approves remission for prisoners ahead of Pakistan Day, Eidul Fitr

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday approved a 90-day reduction in the sentences of prisoners ahead of Pakistan Day and Eidul Fitr.

Reduction in sentences will not apply to prisoners involved in murder, espionage, or anti-state activities. Reduction in sentences will not apply to convicted criminals of rape, theft, robbery, abduction, and terrorism. Reduction in sentences will not apply to criminals causing financial loss to the national treasury or involved in crimes under the Foreigners Act 1946 and the Control of Narcotics Substances (Amendment) Act.

Prisoners over 65 years who have served one-third of their sentence will be eligible for reduction. Women prisoners over 60 years who have served one-third of their sentence will also be eligible for reduction. Reduction in sentences will also apply to individuals under 18 years who have served one-third of their sentence.
