WEB DESK: President Asif Ali Zardari has officially signed into law the Special Economic Zones (Amendment) Bill, 2026, marking a significant milestone in the country’s legislative and economic landscape.
The head of state granted his assent to the piece of legislation on Thursday, acting directly upon the formal advice tendered by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in accordance with established constitutional protocols, according to Radio Pakistan.
Driving industrial growth and foreign investment
The freshly enacted amendment bill is widely anticipated to overhaul the operational framework of industrial enclaves across the nation, streamlining bureaucratic processes for both domestic and international enterprises.
Insiders close to the development suggest that the new legal parameters aim to modernise fiscal incentives, simplify the land allotment process, and establish a more robust single-window facility for investors.
By reducing administrative red tape, the government intends to position the country as a highly competitive manufacturing hub in the region, particularly targeting high-yield sectors such as technology, textiles, and green energy.
Strengthening global commerce and partnerships
A key objective driving this legislative update is the alignment of the country’s special economic zones with global best practices, thereby reassuring international financial institutions and bilateral trading partners.
The government intends to leverage these upgraded zones to boost export volumes, generate thousands of skilled employment opportunities, and secure a steady influx of foreign direct investment (FDI).
Economic analysts have noted that the smooth legislative coordination between Prime Minister Sharif’s administration and the presidency signals a unified political front dedicated to long-term economic stabilisation and industrial modernisation.
