PTI disowns Gohar’s statement calling May 9 ‘wrong’

May 9 was wrong, says pti chairman gohar

PESHAWAR: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan on Wednesday acknowledged that his party had “made many mistakes”, adding that the events of May 9 were wrong and “should never happen again”, as he called for political unity amid relief efforts in flood-hit Buner.

Speaking to reporters in Peshawar, Barrister Gohar said PTI was “not refusing” trials related to the May 9 cases but insisted the party had not been treated in accordance with the law.

He also complained that the PTI founder was being denied basic rights in prison.

Claiming that PTI had won 170 seats in the general election, he alleged that the party’s parliamentary strength had since been whittled down to 76.

“Our MNAs are not terrorists… we, too, made mistakes, but this must stop now,” he said, adding — by way of metaphor — that lawmakers were being unseated “faster than leaves fall in autumn”.

Barrister Gohar said he could not meet the PTI founder during the latest prison visitation window due to engagements in Buner but maintained that “whatever the founder decides is our decision”.

Thanking the armed forces, federal and provincial authorities, and welfare organisations for assistance in Buner, the PTI chief said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had sought heavy machinery from the centre to speed up road clearance.

“With the equipment we have, we aim to clear all roads today,” he noted, while lauding the KP chief minister’s announced support for damaged infrastructure.

PTI denies reports of apology on May 9 cases

PTI was quick to reject reports suggesting that the party had issued any apology or softened its stance, saying remarks attributed to its chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan had been “misrepresented in the media”.

In a statement, the PTI’s Central Information Department clarified that “no official statement or apology” had been issued by the party.

It said the impression that PTI had apologised or acted under pressure was “completely false and misleading”.

“The party’s stance remains what Imran Khan has always presented,” the statement read, adding that PTI viewed the events of May 9 as a “false flag operation” aimed at misleading the public and fuelling propaganda against the party.

The party reaffirmed that its narrative and struggle were “fully aligned with Imran Khan’s vision and position”.
