LONDON: The British royal family marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of Britain’s late Queen Elizabeth II through a series of commemorative events.
King Charles III, along with his son Prince William and daughter-in-law Catherine, Princess of Wales, took part in engagements held to honour the occasion.
King Charles paid tribute to his “darling mama,” reflecting on Queen Elizabeth II’s life, legacy, and lasting impact. In a televised message, he highlighted her 70-year reign, remembering her warmth, humour, and her “marvellous twinkle of the eye.”
As part of the commemorations, the King also visited the British Museum and supported plans for a national memorial in St James’s Park.
The Princess of Wales, who recently recovered from cancer, joined Prince William in welcoming guests from diverse backgrounds. The couple attended a reception at Buckingham Palace, marking the centenary of Queen Elizabeth’s birth, and received well-wishers for the first time in such an event.
During the gathering in the Palace, the princess was also seen giving a comforting hug to 88-year-old Tony Gledhill, who was the George Cross hero.
During their conversation, the hero looked emotional as he shared a moment with Catherine, explaining afterwards that his wife had recently died – and she had told him he must attend the palace event before she died.
Buckingham Palace also released photographs featuring Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla, alongside the Prince and Princess of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, the Duke of Kent, and Princess Alexandra of Kent, to mark what would have been Queen Elizabeth II’s 100th birthday.
