Rashee Rice: Why Chiefs WR was ordered to jail after probation violation

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has been ordered to serve 30 days in jail after violating probation linked to his role in a high-speed crash that injured several people in Dallas.

According to multiple US reports, including ESPN and the Associated Press, Rice was taken into custody on Tuesday after testing positive for THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana, which breached the conditions of his probation. Prosecutors said the NFL player was required to begin serving a previously delayed jail sentence immediately.

“Mr. Rice was taken into custody today in the 194th Judicial District Court for testing positive for THC and ordered to serve the 30 days that he had previously been ordered to serve at a later time,” the Dallas County District Attorney’s office said in a statement, according to ESPN.

The case stems from a March 2024 crash on Dallas’ North Central Expressway, where authorities said Rice was driving a Lamborghini at speeds of up to 119 mph before a chain-reaction collision left multiple people injured. Investigators said several individuals involved left the scene before police arrived. Rice later accepted responsibility and publicly apologised.

In July 2025, the Chiefs receiver pleaded guilty to third-degree felony charges, including collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury. As part of the agreement, Rice received five years of deferred probation and a 30-day jail sentence that could be served later, provided he complied with probation rules.

The incident had already resulted in a six-game NFL suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. Rice is now expected to miss the Chiefs’ organised team activities and mandatory minicamp while serving his sentence.

Rice, drafted by Kansas City in 2023, was part of the Chiefs squad that lifted the Super Bowl during his rookie season.
