Running Point is back on Netflix, but this time, it is not just the storyline driving the buzz.
The second season of the Kate Hudson-led comedy, which premiered on April 23, is quietly stacked with surprise cast additions and cameo appearances that many viewers are only just starting to notice.
While the series continues to follow Isla Gordon, played by Kate Hudson, as she chases a championship with her basketball team, it is the influx of unexpected names that is giving Season 2 a fresh edge.
A wave of unexpected faces
Leading the new additions is Ray Romano, who steps in as the team’s new head coach, Norm Stinson. His character replaces the previous coach and brings a more unconventional, and often awkward, energy to the role.
The season also introduces Ken Marino as a persistent courtside figure and Blake Anderson as a chaotic wildcard tied to one of the show’s central characters.
But it is the guest appearances that are turning heads.
Octavia Spencer makes a standout appearance as a civil rights attorney caught up in a team dispute, while Nicole Richieappears as a high-powered sponsor with personal ties to Isla.
New characters, bigger stakes
Season 2 also expands its world with additions like Richa Moorjani, who plays the team’s sharp accountant navigating financial chaos, and Tommy Dewey, who steps in as a rival executive looking to shake things up.
Jake Picking joins as a high-profile player acquisition, adding both on-court pressure and off-court tension.
The returning cast, including Brenda Song, Drew Tarver and Max Greenfield, continues to anchor the series, but the balance has clearly shifted with the expanded ensemble.
A bigger play in season 2
Created by Mindy Kaling, Running Point appears to be leaning harder into its mix of sports drama and workplace comedy in its second outing.
The addition of recognisable names and layered guest roles suggests a deliberate push to broaden the show’s appeal, giving viewers more to latch onto beyond its central storyline.
For many, the real hook this season is not just what happens next, but spotting who shows up along the way.
