RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has introduced new artificial intelligence-powered technologies to facilitate travel procedures for Hajj pilgrims under the Makkah Route Initiative.
The Kingdom’s Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), launched the advanced digital solutions as part of efforts to improve services for pilgrims and ensure a smoother travel experience.
Now in its eighth year, the initiative is being implemented through 17 ports in 10 countries, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
A newly developed smart mobile device uses AI and data technologies to simplify procedures, especially for elderly pilgrims and people with disabilities, through an automated system.
The device can verify travel documents and visas with high accuracy while also capturing biometric data, facial images and passport details in less than 40 seconds per pilgrim.
Saudi authorities said the initiative reflects the Kingdom’s progress in adopting modern technologies to speed up procedures, improve operational efficiency and enhance the overall pilgrim experience during Hajj.
This year’s Hajj is expected to fall between May 25 and May 30, subject to the sighting of the Dhul Hijjah moon.
