NEW YORK: A groundbreaking experiment has seen surgeons transplant a pig’s kidney into a brain-dead human, where it has remained functional for over a month.
The New York-based team behind the procedure hopes that this achievement will pave the way for similar operations on living patients in need of transplants.
Researchers are exploring the potential of using animal organs to address the critical shortage of transplantable organs for humans. The recent experiment, conducted by NYU Langone Health, represents the longest duration a pig kidney has remained functional in a human body.
According to the Associated Press, the experiment was made possible by genetically modifying pigs to better match human organs. This is a strategy known as xenotransplantation.
While previous attempts at animal-to-human transplants have faced immune system rejection, the modified kidneys are showing promising results. The experiment’s success offers insights into the feasibility of using pig organs for transplantation and organ donation for research purposes.
The breakthrough is part of broader scientific efforts to accelerate the development of clinical trials involving animal organ transplants. The experiment at NYU Langone Health is one of several recent developments aimed at advancing xenotransplantation research.
Over 100,000 patients remain on transplant waiting lists in the United States. These innovative techniques offer hope for potentially saving lives in the future.
